Impel, Release - an art installation
In Impel, Release, David I. Weiner and Krystal J. Grant combine photographs captured in the microfluidics laboratory at Stony Brook University, sound recorded in the Staller Center Recital Hall, and thermoformed sculpture inspired by motion. The high-speed photography from the lab examines the intricacies formed by molten wax extruded into cold water. The photos are selectively colored and processed into stop-motion animation. The delay and layering of live piano sounds echo the reflective quality of the video, which is projected onto suspended, semi-translucent composites of plastic and scrim. The interlacing of resonant sounds and vibrant projections activate these otherwise stark white materials, referencing their shared metamorphic origins.
